Inspiring Figures

Work by American female artists past and present will be exhibited together in a celebration of American women portraying the human figure. Organized by the Portrait Society of America, the exhibit features Butler historic works as well as works by acclaimed contemporary artists in combination with artwork selected from a juried competition. Inspiring Figures is an educational exhibit with programs includes podcasts, films, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and family programming.
Inspiring Figures explores the distinctive influence of female artists and their continued importance in the development of American figurative art and portraiture. Selected works from the juried competition will juxtapose a collection of figures by historic and invited artists, bringing together a spectrum of artwork which highlights the groundbreaking impact of American women artists. The Butler Institute of American Art will host this landmark exhibition September 12—October 31, 2010.
